When you put a dead salt-water object in your tank, it can cause some crazy water problems due to decomposition of anything that may have been living on it, and due to the actual death of the sponge or coral itself. You’re asking for a lot of trouble if you try using something like that…
They make life-like corals and sponges that are strictly decoration and will not cause water problems. I saw one yesterday at the pet store that actually is made of a rubbery type material and moves with the water – looks pretty realistic. That would be infinitely better for your tank than a dead sponge or dead coral.
Also – Discus fish need a LOT of space – and extremely peaceful tank mates. So be sure that you’re providing for their needs – they’re very picky and can easily become ill in a less than superior environment.
most synthetic sponges are made to look like real sponges..
real sponges skeletons are mostly hard an brittle, your sponge is probably made for the automobile industry.. if you got one intended for scientific/biology use and can guarentee it’s a real sponge, still don’t do it…. it’ will leach the same minerals as the coral would…
hope you’re ready for discus… they need PRISTINE water quality and plenty of space.. unlee you just want one breeding pair. and you’re looking at a 90+ gallon tank for a school.. you’ll need 6 or more so they don’t fight too much with any one fish.
i also hope you have a LARGE and good quality canister filter…
it’s alot of work to keep a discus tank.. you need to keep nitrates down, pH down, hardness down, kH down, and should probably have lot’s of live plants and a good amount of driftwood…
I doubt it. many sponges are toxic. also, if you are going to keep discus, I would go for the most natural environment possible, becuase the fish are very easily stressed.
