Frage von tuckerfoolio : discus fish ?
will a discus do well in a 36 gallon tank with plecos and otos?
all of my plecos are dwarfs and get no longer than 5 inches

Beste Antwort:

Answer by dreammaker2623
It depends on how large and what kind of plecos that you have. If you have small plecos (the ones that do not get too large and they can take the higher temp then it should be OK but if you have regular plecos , they will outgrow the tank and it will not be good enough water conditions for the discus. Otto cats should be OK as long as the discus are not large and the ottos very small.

Frage von Emily : What is the minimum tank size for one discus fish?
I want one and also how do you care for one?

Beste Antwort:

Answer by r m
i never kept a discus in anything smaller than roughly 30 gallons, and even that was only if the discus was small. they need plants, lots of hiding places, and preferably a little subdued lighting, not bright lights. also you need soft water – a low ph about 6 is ideal for them. some prepared aquarium wood to soften the water and “darken” it helps. using moss in the filtering system i found to be a huge aid in healthy discus. your filtration system also not only needs to be very efficient, it also needs to be quiet and NOT strong flowing. i never used powerheads with discus as they like a very peaceful and quiet tank. i used a combo of undergravel and outside aqua clear, running the water over moss during fitrations, not only earth and charcoal. not overfeeding is imperative. do yourself a favour, and read as much as you can about discus before buying one. the tanks also needs to be completely set up and stable with its climate before you add a discuss. i took at least a month preparing a tank with plants and a few tester fish and ensured completely accurate readings regarding ph, nitrate/nitrite etc before removing them and adding discus.

Frage von nairji : Reg. Discus fish . They do not produce enough mucus on their bodies to feed the fry. How to enhance it. Reply
As mentioned above could you pls. provide me how to produce more mucus on the bodies of discus fish .

Also it is observed that may discus fish eat their eggs before it is fertilised. How to avoid it and what are the reasons for it. Can we separate one of them and see the results?

You reply on this topic shall be highly appreciated.

Thanks,

There are additives you can buy to increase mucus on a fish. Stress coat is the only one on the top of my head right now.

Discus are usually good parents like most cichlids, but the first few times they mate they may mess up, and then eat the fry/eggs. They also will eat fry/eggs if they feel that the fry/eggs are in danger. They eat their kids before a predator can. Just try to make them feel safe. Maybe even cover up 3 sides of the aquarium. If you have any fish in the tank with them you may want to temporarily remove them. Or if you want you can remove the parents, no harm will be done.

Good Luck!

Frage von I LOVE HARRY POTTER! : How big of a tank do I need for discus fish ?
I know they are schooling fish. How big of a tank do I need for the SMALLEST possible school? (Plus 1 male beta, but it isn’t like that’s going to change the number drastically.) I want to know how much these beautiful things cost, how hard they are to maintain, and the absolute minimum for a tank (and about how much the tank will cost.).

Beste Antwort:

Answer by Drew N
I would say minimum of 55 gallon. You can mainly keep angelfish with them. A Betta will be eaten after so long. They are around $ 50-$ 300 depending on what kind you get. Only get around 4 when you do use a 55 gallon.

Frage von Daniel : Can 2 discus fish be in a 37 gallon tank without fighting?
also a couple of neons/corrys thats all. i know that discus has a pecking order, but eventually will they settle and dont mind at all?

Beste Antwort:

Answer by Emma
If they are a mated pair, then yes. If not, I wouldn’t recommend it. If you’re not keeping a breeding tank with a mated male and female (and 40 gallons is recommended there), they do best in a school. A bare minimum would be 3+ and 5+ is much better. To do a school of discus you need a much larger tank. 40 gallons is enough for two discus, but only if they are kept by themselves, so I would not add anything else to the tank.

Frage von JaiKUBER : Questions about Discus Fish: What all are the best pre-packed & readily available food to feed them?
I have heard of Sera Brine Shrimps and also Sera Discus Pellets, as well as Tetra Discus Flakes.. is there anything else ?

It sounds like you need to do a little research through some good discus sites because you’re asking WAY too many questions. (If you’ve done proper research, you won’t need to ask such basic questions)

Do research first, and if you have a question that remains unanswered, THEN you ask a question. With any species of fish, you’ll want to do AS MUCH research as possible. The more you know, the less likely you’ll have trouble later.

Here are some good sites you’ll want to read through:

Also, Google is a useful tool. ;)

Frage von Justin : Can discus fish live with oter cichlids in a 55 gallon?
I have 2, 4′ discus in a 45 gallon right now and i would like to move them in a 55 gallon with other african cichlids. the cichlids vary from 1.5′ to 3′ and I have 4 in the 55. Thank you.

Answer by Simply Monsterous
No. Discus will not thrive in a tank with cichlids. They’ll get eaten up and very stressed. They come from different habitats & areas.
